The Tell City Chair Company (Tell City, Indiana) started in 1865. Logs were floated down the river, pulled into the saw mill, and made into chairs, sometimes in as little as 24-48 hours. In the early 1900′ they were making 12,000 double-cane chairs/week. In 1914, they began making rocking chairs and chairs for offices and schools. It became the largest chair factory in the world. They sold to 8,000 furniture stores. Later they started making tables and bedroom furniture. In 1985 the workers’ union went on strike. In the next 9 years, the company could not recover. In 1994, there was another strike for 8 months. Then there was another strike in 1996, and the plant closed for a few years. In 2003, three of the factories were demolished. In 2011, after 146 years, Tell City Furniture closed forever.

John Alexander Kling, an immigrant from Sweden, started his own furniture manufacturing business in 1911. By 1928, he had 5 factories with sales of about $3 MILLION. Because of the Stock Market crash and the Great Depression, sales in 1933 were only $1.5 MILLION. In 1934, John Kling died, and his 2 sons, Arvid and Denold, took over the business. In 1962, Kling Factories were sold to BAUMRITTER CORPORATION, which later became ETHAN ALLEN. Kling branded furniture was produced by Ethan Allen into the 1990’s. The original Mayville, NY, factory was operated by Ethan Allen until it closed in 2003.
